Luis Enrique on par with Pep – Pique

Luis Enrique deserves proper recognition for matching the feats of legendary predecessor Pep Guardiola and winning the treble in his first season as Barcelona coach.

Saturday s 3-1 victory over Juventus at Berlin s Olympiastadion added the UEFA Champions League to La Liga and Copa del Rey crowns already sealed by Barca this term.

Guardiola also immediately sealed the treble after replacing Frank Rijkaard in 2008, going on to secure another 11 titles in his following three years at the Camp Nou helm.

Now Bayern Munich manager, Guardiola is widely regarded as one of Europe s master tacticians, a position that Pique believes Luis Enrique has now shown himself worthy of also holding.

Speaking after Saturday s triumph, Pique said: It s the same importance Guar…

Prediction: Villarreal vs Liverpool

Villarreal and Liverpool are now just two steps away from being crowned Europa League champions and securing Champions League qualification, and that should be enough incentive for the two sides to give their best when they square off in the first semi-final leg at El Madrigal on Thursday night.

Villarreal

This has been one of the most successful seasons in Villarreal’s recent history, but the Yellow Submarine cannot afford to relax just yet as they can turn it into a feat not to be forgotten. Few weeks ago it seemed that Marcelino Garcia Toral’s side would have no problems clinching the final Champions League berth in La Liga, but despite failing to win any of their last three league fixtures, Villarreal sit four points clear of fifth placed Celta Vigo with three games to…

Rooney: Calvert-Lewin deserved England chance before Abraham

Wayne Rooney has backed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to build on his impressive start with England, believing the Everton forward deserved an opportunity at international level ahead of Tammy Abraham.

Calvert-Lewin scored 15 goals in all competitions for his club in the 2019-20 season but had to patiently wait for his chance at international level.

However, a great start to the new campaign led to a debut for the 23-year-old against Wales this month. He seized the opportunity, finding the net in a 3-0 triumph for Gareth Southgate s side at Wembley.

Abraham, meanwhile, made his England bow back in 2017, his chance coming at a time when he was still yet to break into the first-team picture at Chelsea.

In his column for the Sunday Times, Rooney raised con…
